General information

Transborder union «Euroregion Bug» (ERB) was founded in September 1995.
In May 1998 Brest region (Belarus) together with Biala Podlaska voevodship (Poland) entered ERB.

After administrative reformation in Poland there appeared the following members of Transborder union Euroregion “Bug”: Brest region (Belarus), Lublin voevodship (Poland), Volyn region (Ukraine).

Since June 1996 Euroregion “Bug” is a member of European Border Regions Association.

Territory of the Euroregion is around 80 thousand sq. km. 
Population of the Euroregion is about 5 million people.
Largest cities: Brest, Baranovichy, Pinsk (Republic of Belarus), Lublin, Biala Podlaska (Republic of Poland), Lutsk, Kovel (Ukraine).

About natural merits of Euroregion “Bug” vividly tells the fact that on its territory were created National Parks:

  • Belovezhsky (on Belarusian and Polish territory), its territory 87,6 thousand hectares, it comprises the only in the Europe primeval wood which has more than several thousand species of mostly unique animals and plants.;
  • Polessky (on Polish territory);
  • Rostochansky (on Polish), with rare landscapes, combining flat peaks, abrupt slopes and deep cut valleys;
  • Shatsky (on Ukrainian), it includes 22 lakes of karstic and post-karstic origin.

Main advantage of Euroregion “BUG” is its profitable geographical position. Main communications go through its territory connecting countries of Eastern Europe, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Baltic countries.

There are passengers’ and goods’ frontier-crossings of European importance, transportation industry is developed.

Free Economic Zone “Brest” is located on the territory of Brest region, which has more than 100 residents including companies with foreign capital.

Developed telecommunications network, network of highways and also water way Zapadny Bug is common to the region.

Euroregion BUG – fruitful cooperation of three countries

Administrative structure:

  • Council (10 representatives from each side),
  • Council Presidium (1 representative from each side with by-turn nomination of the chairperson),
  • Secretariat,
  • Work Groups on selected areas of cooperation.

Activities of the Euroregion:

  • Development of mutually beneficial relations;
  • Cooperation in social and cultural spheres, also in ecology sphere and prevention of emergency situations sphere;
  • Assistance in development of contacts between neighboring regions in economy, communications, transport, territorial planning;
  • Cooperation of local authorities and local people.

Implemented projects within International Programmes:

  • Broadening of network of small interstate frontier crossings;
  • Development of infrastructure of international frontier crossings of European importance («Warshawski Most», «Kozlovichy»);
  • TRIC (transborder information and contacts Brest – Biala Podlaska);

Sources of finance:

Financing of the projects is being done by contribution of applicants and European Commission co-financing.
More over, in the financing framework, received from Small Projects’ Fund, which is controlled by Association of self-governments of Euroregion “Bug” (Poland); Polish organizations were implementing cross-border mini-projects, and Belarusian organizations were their partners.
